Germany alone started WW II – Why is TOI running riot against Yad Vashem?

In an article for the Times of Israel (TOI), journalist Sam Sokol, with the help of JTA and TOI staff, chastises Holocaust memorial museum Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, for supposedly inaccurate or even “revisionist” videos, screened at the 5th Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem on January 23, 2020, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Sokol’s article “Scholars urge transparency to restore Yad Vashem credibility after Putin fiasco” raises questions about the quality of TOI’s journalism as well as about the political culture of Holocaust remembrance in Israel and among Jews.

I am not talking about the speeches or remarks at the event (including troubling facts or completely false numbers of Jewish victims in the Soviet Union by Putin in his speech) in question on January 23, 2020, at the 5th World Holocaust Forum. I am only analyzing the major video of that day (7:45 minutes), which is now attacked by the Times of Israel and Sam Sokol and many others, quoted in Sokol’s piece.

We already know about the attempts of gentiles to distort the Shoah. It started shortly after 1945, when Germans compared Auschwitz to the bombing of Dresden. Then, historian Ernst Nolte wrote in the 1970s that Stalin was first, not Hitler and the Germans. This Red equals Brown has become a major ideology of the European Union in the last few decades.

In 1997, French anti-communist (former Maoist) Stéphane Courtois edited the “Black Book of Communism,” claiming that communism killed many more people than Nazism and the Germans: Communism was worse than the Shoah – that is the antisemitic ideology of that kind of people. Those people deny the unprecedented character of Auschwitz, Sobibor and Treblinka, where for the very first time in world history, an entire people was chosen to be eliminated: Germans wanted to eradicate Jews and Judaism from the earth. They almost succeeded and killed six million Jews in the Holocaust. Post-colonialism, for those interested in the field, follows an equally troubling denial of the unprecedented character of the Shoah, by the way.

In 2008, the Prague Declaration, signed by Vaclav Havel and Joachim Gauck, along with Czech, Lithuanian and other politicians and activists, urges the EU to rewrite all textbooks and to warn everyone about the evils of both Nazism and Communism. That downplaying of National Socialism is common among many in Europe and the US.

Professor Dovid Katz dealt extensively with the dangerous “double Genocide ideology” of the Prague Declaration, Baltic politics and European activists alike.

It is to some extent news, however, that Jews and Israelis join the chorus of downplaying the role of Nazi Germany when it comes to the Second World War. Sokol claims that the Soviet Union holds a co-responsibility for the outbreak of WWII because of the Hitler-Stalin-Pact from August 23, 1939. That is a lie, though – as Germany wanted to invade and destroy Poland and the Soviet Union and other states in the East anyway. Realpolitik did not change Hitler’s and Germany’s intention to invade Eastern Europe and to kill European Jews, who were seen behind both Western capitalism and Eastern communism.

While it is unclear how many and which videos he talks about, the main video of that event is linked in the article. It is a 7:45 minute video about the development of German antisemitism and the rise of Nazi Germany to power. The video depicts some famous Jews like Einstein, Freud and Walter Benjamin to emphasize the role Jews played in European culture prior to World War II.

It shows how antisemitism spread in Nazi Germany, from boycotts (1933) and harassment to racial laws, the nights of pogroms (Nov. 9, 1938) to deportation, ghettos, starving, torture, murder and extermination. It then shows Sir Winston Churchill who spoke about the importance to stand “together” against Germany.

Then, the video deals with the fact that only an allied pact of the West and East, the US, Great Britain and the Soviet Union was able to fight, stop and finally defeat National Socialism. Correctly, the video says that the Red Army was the first one to fight back against the Germans.

From the time of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 through to the first landings at Normandy in June 1944, millions of Soviet troops and citizens perished in the battle to push the Nazi armies back. D-Day, June 6, 1944, is correctly shown as the start of the major Western front against the Germans, alongside the Eastern front and the Soviet Union that had been fighting effectively from later 1941 onward.

On July 24, 1944, the Red Army liberated the extermination camp of Majdanek, without realizing, before their entry, the unspeakable catastrophe of the Holocaust that transpired there. Then, the Holocaust of Hungarian Jews in some two months in 1944 is reported, with 450.000 Jews being exterminated. Tens of thousands of Jews would then die in the death marches (from the camps westward to Germany).

The video clearly shows the Allies working together in the liberation of Europe. The Red Army liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau, the US Army Buchenwald and Dachau. British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen. The fall of Berlin (to the Soviet and American armies) and the liberation of Theresienstadt ended the war against Nazi Germany.

I had seen that video — which is linked in the TOI article by Sam Sokol —when it was screened in Jerusalem via the Yad Vashem livestream. I have watched it again now: What is the problem with that accurate video? As in any concise synopsis, many things are of necessity left out. But, it rightly explains how the Allies, including, and most importantly in the actual history as it unfolded, the Red Army, liberated Europe from Nazi Germany and indeed, how Auschwitz was liberated on January 27, 1945.

Obviously Holocaust distorting people with a political agenda to “equalize” Nazi and Soviet crimes as per the far right’s campaign led by East European governments, now notice that the Hitler-Stalin pact of August 23, 1939, is missing. Well, for that matter, so are the capitulations of Chamberlain at Munich and all the others. It has nothing to do with January 27, 1945.

Some might see Yad Vashem as nothing but a loudspeaker of Bibi Netanyahu, and I share skepticism about his policies, no doubt about this. However, this is a huge fight about how to commemorate the outbreak of WWII.

If Sokol and his allies succeed in saying that it HAS TO BE MENTIONED that there was the Hitler-Stalin pact when it comes to Auschwitz – antisemitism has succeeded in bringing even Jewish and Israeli scholars and activists in line with right-wing extremist revisionism.

Why? Because that is an antisemitic and far-right revisionist narrative, modified in fine Western style from its far-right East European originators by historian Timothy Snyder, former German President Joachim Gauck and right-wing extremist historians such as Jorg Baberowski of Germany.

The same people say that fact that Poland was occupied by the Soviets is missing!

Yes, after war’s end, completely true. But what has that got to do with a film about defeating Nazi Germany and liberating Auschwitz?

To focus on crimes by Stalin not as a separate issue, but mixed up with the Holocaust, is wrong and historically misleading. It is precisely what German antisemites since Ernst Nolte tried to pursue: both sides are evil, Nazis and Communists, everything is the same, one big mishmash.

Stalin committed many horrendous crimes. These crimes, though, have literally no place in a video dedicated to the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The video does not focus on the failure of the US or Great Britain. – It could have mentioned the widespread antisemitism in America and Britain, the closure of the US border as well as Palestine by the British.

However, the aggressive tone of Sam Sokol and many historians he quotes – from Deborah Lipstadt to Dan Michman and even Efraim Zuroff – speaks volume about the intention to follow the revisionist narrative: Red equals Brown. Sokol goes so far and writes:

The videos presented at the ceremony — which was attended by dozens of world leaders, among them Russian President Vladimir Putin — focused almost exclusively on the Soviet Union’s role in defeating the Nazis, while downplaying the role of America, Britain, and other countries. They also failed to mention Joseph Stalin’s deal with Adolf Hitler in the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact that preceded the war, Russia’s occupation of parts of Poland, and other facts uncomfortable for Moscow.”

As shown, that is simply incorrect – that video does indeed emphasize the role of the allies! Watch it and you will see.

If Jews now start using anti-Jewish historical revisionism such as that of Ernst Nolte, claiming that Stalin was first or at least as evil as Hitler – then Yad Vashem should stand strongly and clearly against the revisionists.

This is not about belittling the evil intentions of the Stalin-Hitler pact. It is about the misrepresentation by that pact by those in the far right East European antisemitic camp, and their followers in the West, to elevate it to a Holocaust-grade event as part of the effort to downgrade the Holocaust. Many Jews are alive today in Eastern Europe and beyond because from Sept 1, 1939 onward, their forebears escaped from the Nazi to the Soviet held sectors.

It is time for the West, Israel and Yad Vashem to understand which modes of discourse signal the very revisionism that is anathema to all that Yad Vashem stands for.

Finally, let me teach you a lesson about fascism in the 21st century: a few days ago, February 5, 2020, the fascist Björn Höcke and the right-wing extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) voted in favor of the candidate for the head of the State of Thuringia (some 2 million inhabitants) from the conservative-libertarian FDP, a no-name called Kemmerich. Mr. Kemmerich even accepted the vote after it was clear that he did only win because of the votes by the fascists. Shake-hands with wannabe-Goebbels Björn Höcke followed. Shockwaves through the democratic parts of Germany. That was the first time that a Nazi like party voted for a Prime Minister of a German state since 1945 and their vote was crucial. A few days later, the FDP politician had to resign, due to political pressure from the ruling Christian Democratic Party and the FDP, while both parties had supported Kemmerich just a few hours before!

The main reason for the Conservatives and the libertarian-conservatives to vote alongside with the fascists of the AfD was to avoid the left-wing Prime Minister of Thuringia, Bodo Ramelow from the Party of the Left, who is rather a Social Democrat. The fascists and conservatives frame him as “communist” or “socialist” and preferred fascism over communism or socialism.

Those Israeli journalists or Jewish-American and other historians who claim that the Soviet Union allegedly played a pivotal or any role in the outbreak of World War II follow the very same kind of what I call “existential anti-communism.”

Those who want so speak about the crimes of communism when asked about the liberation of Auschwitz, distort the worst crime in history and follow antisemitic revisionism.

The video in question by Yad Vashem is a video dedicated to teach a big audience about the liberation of Auschwitz and that video is correct in not at all focusing on Soviet policies in other aspects, it does equally not focus on the failure of the US and Great Britain to stop Hitler and the Germans long before September 1, 1939.

Sam Sokol seems to be following the very European antisemitic trope of equating Red and Brown and I am wondering why and if historians such as Deborah Lipstadt (““I am absolutely heartbroken that Yad Vashem, which has such a stellar reputation and stayed above the political fray, should have become part of this politicization of history,” she lamented), Dan Michman (“Unfortunately, the short films that accompanied the event, and especially the film that was meant briefly to present the key points of World War II and the Holocaust, included a number of inaccuracies that resulted in a partial and unbalanced presentation of the historical facts”), or Efraim Zuroff (“Yad Vashem has never engaged in Holocaust distortion; exactly the opposite,” commented Efraim Zuroff, a Nazi-hunter who runs the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Jerusalem office, surmising that the “material was not reviewed by the leading historians of Yad Vashem” before being presented publicly”) play that game, as he quotes them accordingly.

It is not by accident that historian Dina Porat did not say anything in public so far, which is sad, because she could perhaps tell us a different story about that very video by Yad Vashem.

Nazi Germany was all alone responsible for the outbreak of World War II.

Germans wanted the war, they wanted to invade Poland, the Soviet Union and all of Europe. They wanted to eradicate Jews and Judaism from the earth.

To even mention Soviet or other realpolitik when it comes to the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and to insinuate September 1, 1939 was not Germany’s responsibility alone, promotes an old right-wing extremist lie.

Everybody who rejects the historical truth of the German and only German guilt of starting World War II is part of the problem.

Dovid Katz puts it splendidly:

While the Soviets’ 1939 invasion of eastern Poland was one of thousands of disgraceful and contemptible invasions in world history, it was not “the same” as Hitler’s 1939 invasion of western/central Poland. In the German sector, Hitler’s forces unleashed the Holocaust, the worst genocide in the history of humankind. In the Soviet sector, all of the various peoples were granted full equality to live equally under (lousy, autocratic, freedom-stifling, wealth-stealing) Soviet law. Any Jew that could flee to the Soviet sector was quick to do so. Many thousands of Jews today exist on the planet precisely because their parents, grandparents and others fled to the Soviet sector.

 

Möchte Maybrit Illner dem Faschismus zur Macht verhelfen?

Talkshows sind für den Niedergang der Demokratie wesentlich mitverantwortlich.

Wer namentlich immer und immer und immer wieder Alexander Gauland oder andere AfD-Politiker in die Talkshows einlädt, nachdem längst bekannt ist, dass diese Leute die “deutschen Soldaten in zwei Weltkriegen” preisen, den Holocaust als “Vogelschiss” bezeichnen oder wie jetzt von Gauland angekündigt, auch Linken-Politiker zum Ministerpräsidenten wählen wollen, damit diese die Wahl nicht annehmen können, handelt antidemokratisch und pro-faschistisch.

Die Frage ist also: wieviel Pro-Faschismus steckt in Maybrit Illner, Sandra Maischberger, Anne Will oder natürlich Frank Plasberg, die diese AfD-Hetzer*innen immer und immer und immer wieder zu Wort kommen lassen vor einem Millionenpublikum?

Dabei schauen Nazis, die die AfD wählen, eh nicht ARD und ZDF, aber jene Deutschen, die das tun und bislang nicht AfD wählten, sind ja nicht immun gegen Nazismus, es werden also in jedem Fall mehr AfD-Wähler*innen werden und nicht weniger, je öfter die antidemokratischen Hetzerinnen und Hetzer in den Mainstreammedien kommen. Dass Lügen sich einprägen, ja subkutan ihr Gift absetzen und alsbald oder irgendwann wirken, hat Goebbels hinreichend bewiesen.

Das ist Deutschland 2020. Mehr Prä-Faschismus gab es seit 1945 nicht.

Konservative und Bürgerliche verhelfen dem Faschismus zur Macht – 2020 in Thüringen

CDU und FDP stimmen gemeinsam mit der einzigen Partei, die im Deutschen Bundestag sitzt und die von der israelischen Regierung nicht empfangen wird, für einen Ministerpräsidenten der FDP in Thüringen, um den Linken Bodo Ramelow zu verhindern.

Antikommunismus und Pro-Faschismus zeichnete die Konservativen, Bürgerlichen und Liberalen schon vor 1933 aus und sie verhalfen der NSDAP zur Macht.

Jetzt verhelfen CDU und FDP der AfD zur Macht, erstmal indirekt als Königsmacher, bald als Koalitionspartner. Faschisten wie Björn Höcke, die den Bürgerkrieg wollen, werden als respektable Politikstrategen anerkannt.

Mehr Prä-Faschismus gab es in Deutschland seit 1945 nicht.

Der Feind heißt CDU. Der Feind heißt FDP. Der Feind heißt AfD.

Blätter für deutschen und internationalen Antisemitismus?

Die Zeitschrift „Blätter für deutsche und internationale Politik“ ist eines der bekanntesten politischen und politikwissenschaftlichen Periodika im deutschsprachigen Raum. Wer ein Public Intellectual ist oder meint zu sein und sich irgendwie als „aufgeklärt“, „liberal“ oder „links“ versteht, publiziert dort. Nicht weniger als 22 Personen gehören zum „Herausgeberkreis“, von Katajun Amirpur über Jürgen Habermas und Seyla Benhabib hin zu Dan Diner, Claus Leggewie und Micha Brumlik reicht die typische Palette, angeführt von Albrecht von Lucke und der Redaktion. Die Themen reichen von Rechtsextremismus über Kapitalismus zu Ökologie, Philosophie und Antisemitismus in der DDR.

Doch wie so oft, wird es schwierig, sobald es um Juden und den Zionismus geht. Klar wird in den Blättern an die toten Juden der Shoah erinnert. Aber wie steht die Zeitschrift zu den lebenden Juden in Israel? Das zeigt sich exemplarisch in der Februar-Ausgabe 2020 der Blätter. Dort schreibt Lothar Zechlin über „Israelkritik gleich Antisemitismus?“.

Der 1944 geborene Zechlin war Professor für Öffentliches Recht und Hochschulmanager, er wäre vor einigen Jahren um ein Haar Präsident der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz geworden und unterlag in einer Stichwahl. Zu seinen Publikationen gehören „Minderheitenschutz im deutschen und französischen Aktienrecht“, „Streik, Strafrecht, Polizei. Juristischer Leitfaden für Konflikte mit der Staatsgewalt“ oder „Understanding and developing your role as a leader“ bis hin zu „Schadensersatzansprüche bei Klassenfahrten“. Als Publizist zu Antisemitismus oder Antizionismus ist Zechlin bislang nicht in Erscheinung getreten.

Zechlin geht es um die Arbeitsdefinition der International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), einem Zusammenschluss von derzeit 34 Staaten, die sich auf folgende Definition verständigt haben:

Antisemitismus ist eine bestimmte Wahrnehmung von Juden, die sich als Hass gegenüber Juden ausdrücken kann. Der Antisemitismus richtet sich in Wort und Tat gegen jüdische oder nicht-jüdische Einzelpersonen und / oder deren Eigentum, sowie gegen jüdische Gemeindeinstitutionen und religiöse Einrichtungen.

Das nennt Zechlin „konturlos“. Dass sich also 34 führende Industrienationen und weitere Länder hinter diese Definition stellen, sei „konturlos“ – was ist mit den anderen gut 160 Staaten, die nicht zur IHRA gehören und für die der Hinweis auf Hass gegen Juden kein Problem darstellt, oder gar Freude evoziert? Die Indifferenz der Weltgemeinschaft war schon während des Holocaust katastrophal. Was bringen all die warmen Wort des Gedenkens, wie sie gerade von solchen Blättern kommen, wenn die lebenden Juden hier und heute im Stich gelassen werden?

Der Bundestag würde nun mit seiner Anti-BDS-Resolution von Mai 2019 die IHRA Definition gar „verfälschen“, wie die Blätter insinuieren, und Hass auf Israel als Form von Antisemitismus aufnehmen:

Erscheinungsformen von Antisemitismus können sich auch gegen den Staat Israel, der dabei als jüdisches Kollektiv verstanden wird, richten.

Das ist jedoch keine Verfälschung, sondern nur eine Konkretisierung der IHRA Definition, die ja ganz absichtlich und nach vielen Jahren der Diskussion diesen Zusatz wie weitere Beispiele anfügte.

Geradezu zynisch schreibt Zechlin:

Die Nahost-Expertin Muriel Asseburg von der Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik stellt dazu fest: ‚Einzelne Vertreter dieser Bewegung [BDS] dürften von Judenhass motiviert sein und manche Aktionen können auch problematisch sein. Das entspricht aber nicht dem Mainstream dieser Bewegung‘.

So wird antisemitische Alltagsgewalt entwirklicht oder affirmiert. Zudem wird nicht der wissenschaftlichen Definition gefolgt, die die Ablehnung jüdischer Souveränität, den heutigen Antizionismus, als antisemitisch definiert. Es ist ein Unterschied ums Ganze, ob jüdische Gruppen vor der Shoah und vor 1948 antizionistisch waren oder nach der Gründung des jüdischen Staates. Wer heute antizionistisch ist, nimmt die Zerstörung Israels und den Tod von Juden billigend in Kauf. Sodann führen die Blätter aus:

…dürfte sich die Unterstützung in aller Regel auf das nichtantisemitische Programm und nicht einzelne Exzesse beziehen.

Lothar Zechlin weiß also, dass sich BDS-Unterstützer*innen „in aller Regel“ auf das „nichtantisemitische Programm“ von BDS beziehen und „nicht“ auf „einzelne Exzesse“. Er hat jedoch überhaupt nicht definiert, dass das geforderte Rückkehrrecht, also das Programm von BDS, antisemitisch ist, weil es völkerrechtlich jüdische Souveränität in einem eigenen Staat ablehnt. In einer Fußnote hat der 75jährige Autor sich abgesichert und autoritär gesetzt, dass Judenhass kein Judenhass ist, wenn er sich „nur“ gegen den Staat der Juden richtet:

Selbst wenn man die Forderung nach Rückkehrrecht und staatsbürgerlicher Gleichheit der Palästinenser als Bedrohung der Existenz Israels als eines jüdischen Staates ansieht (was zu diskutieren wäre), handelte es sich um einen nicht aus Judenfeindlichkeit gespeisten Antizionismus.

Der BDS-Mitbegründer Omar Barghouti wendet sich konstant gegen Israel als jüdischer Staat, erst vor wenigen Monaten wieder in einem Leserbrief an die New York Times: Er möchte einen Staat für Juden und Araber und lehnt den Zionismus und den “jüdischen Staat” kategorisch ab. Das ist antisemitisch. Das ist BDS. Barghouti schreibt am 24. April 2019:

As the philosopher Joseph Levine has written, ‘The very idea of a Jewish state [in Palestine] is undemocratic, a violation of the self-determination rights of its non-Jewish citizens, and therefore morally problematic.’

Das ist auch die Position der Philosophin Judith Butler, die jüngst von der Barenboim-Said Akademie eingeladen wurde, wobei die Veranstaltung dann doch angeblich aus “organisatorischen Gründen” abgesagt wurde, aber die Intention spricht Bände und die Diskussion mit Butler soll nachgeholt werden. Dabei wird Butlers völlige Ablehnung des Zionismus in Israel auch von solchen Autoren völlig zu Recht attackiert, die selbst Kritik am gegenwärtigen Zustand des Landes haben, aber sehen, dass die Ablehnung des jüdischen Staates an und für sich zu gar keiner Verbesserung führen wird – dafür Juden in Gefahr bringt.

Eine der bedeutendsten NGOs im Kampf gegen Antisemitismus ist die Anti-Defamation League (ADL) aus den USA. Sie definiert ganz eindeutig, dass es nicht anitsemitisch ist, Israel oder jedes andere Land zu kritisieren. Es ist aber sehr wohl antisemitisch, den “jüdischen Staat” als solchen abzulehnen:

Is criticism of Israel always anti-Semitic?

No. Anti-Israel activity crosses the line to anti-Semitism when:

All Jews are held responsible for the actions of Israel.

Israel is denied the right to exist as a Jewish state and equal member of the global community.

Traditional anti-Semitic symbols, images or theories are used.

Eine Kritik an der Besatzung des Westjordanlandes gibt es seit 1967 – eine Kritik aus zionistischer Perspektive wie von Amos Oz. BDS hingegen übt keine Kritik an der Politik Israels. BDS und zwar jeder einzelne BDS unterstützende Mensch, möchte Israel als jüdischen Staat zerstören, denn das ist das Programm von BDS, egal wie diese oder jener persönlich das Programm interpretiert, es ist objektiv antisemitisch – eine subjektiv antisemitische Haltung kommt bei vielen noch hinzu.

Zechlin macht sich nicht mal die Mühe Barghoutis ablehnende Haltung gegenüber dem jüdischen Staat zu erwähnen. Diese ignorante oder unwissenschaftliche Herangehensweise ist jedoch nicht nur den Blättern für deutsche und internationale Politik vorbehalten, sie ist Mainstream unter jenen Forscher*innen, Politiker*innen und Aktivist*innen, die den Anti-BDS-Beschluss des Deutschen Bundestages bekämpfen.

Dass die Blätter für deutsche und internationale Politik, die Crème de la Crème des deutschen sozial- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Establishments, sich so offen und aggressiv gegen die Anti-BDS-Resolution des Deutschen Bundestags stellt, sagt alles über die politische Kultur und Situation für Juden und Israel in diesem Land. Es gibt eine ganz dünne Schicht von seriösen Politiker*innen, Journalist*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen und Aktivist*innen, darunter jedoch brodelt die Lava der antiisraelischen Elite Seite an Seite mit dem immer abrufbaren Mob (“Jude, Jude, feiges Schwein, komm heraus und kämpf allein”, wie es zumal muslimische und arabische Hetzer*innen herausbrüllen).

For the very first time, Germany has a vibrant pro-Israel scene, the anti-Germans. Some believe, they rule all of Germany, others fear their influence in Berlin. Many mock them as “capitalist-imperialist monsters,” others believe, anti-Germans are the damned funny, sexiest and best-looking non-Jewish Zionists ever. Should Jews fear the anti-Germans? Wasn’t it mainstream in Jewish homes in the US, like New York Brooklyn, to never ever buy German cars or cookies in the 1950s or 1960s and later, and for very good reasons? Since when was it shocking to be critical of Germany in the UK? Some Catholics believe, the anti-Germans are a kind of atheistic Protestantism, and there might be some truth in it. For most left-wingers in Germany, though, anti-Germans are the biggest of all evils (after the US and Israel, of course). Who are the anti-Germans?

In a fascinating, strange, if not shocking and not well researched article in Haaretz on January 23, 2020, by Ofri Ilany, “Germany’s pro-Israel Left Has a New Target in the Crosshairs: Jews,” the author analyzes the strange development of parts of the German Left. While Ilany correctly focuses on the misguided parts of the pro-Israel camp in Germany (I dealt with that in recent years a lot), he misses other important if not crucial aspects. Ilany insinuates that anti-Germans are a real threat to Jews.

Jews indeed face dramatic threats in Germany these days – mainly from neo-Nazis like the man who tried to kill dozens of Jews in the synagogue in the city of Halle on Yom Kippur and killed two people outside the synagogue and in a Turkish-Döner-restaurant. Or take another shocking report by Jewish author Dimitrij Kapitelman from January 2020, who was at a hospital in Leipzig and faced a conservative doctor who openly admitted that all staff votes for the right-wing extremist and antisemitic Alternative for Germany (AfD). The Central Council of Jews in Germany’s head Josef Schuster repeatedly warned about the AfD and its pseudo pro-Israel agitation. A party that attacks Muslims, Angela Merkel, the media, feminists and left-wingers, that denies climate change and embraces German history, including German soldiers of “two world wars”, as Alexander Gauland, an AfD leader said, will sooner or later also attack Jews. Many voters of the AfD as well as leading politicians of the AfD are outspoken antisemitic or fascists such as Björn Höcke, who denounces Holocaust remembrance, while Gauland called the Holocaust a “shit of a bird”.

Jews also face threats from Muslims on school yards and on the streets. Left-wingers attack Israel on a daily basis and jokes about Jews are common in the bourgeois mainstream in Munich, Berlin, Cologne or Hamburg and every other city, salon or event. We recall the 2018 book by Jewish comedian Oliver Polak (“Against Jew-hatred”), including anti-Jewish examples from his childhood when other schoolkids pointed at him screaming “ihhhh, did you touch him?” and a shocking reminder for him, when leading TV comedian Jan Böhmermann, who had invited Polak to his show, once made a joke about “germicide,” Jews and Polak. Not funny. Richard Chaim Schneider regularly reports about German antisemitism in the mainstream, be it in trains, upper-class restaurants and bars, in newspapers or on the street. He mentions one example from a restaurant in Munich, where he overheard a bourgeois dressed elderly man talking to his comrades that “the Jews once came to Goethe, because they had heard he is about to write something antisemitic in his Faust”… Schneider made Aliyah a few years ago.

Haaretz takes a picture from a pro-Israel rally with a small dog having an Israeli flag on his collar. If you walk with such a dog or all alone with any kind of Israeli or Jewish symbol through several of Berlin’s (or Mannheim’s, Duisburg’s etc.) neighborhoods, you face severe trouble and you will be beaten or harassed. Not a single symbol of any other people or a flag of any other nation-state provokes such reactions. That has literally nothing to do with Israeli politics, that is about the very existence of Jews and Israel.

A kippa or a T-Shirt with a star of David in a subway train in Berlin can be enough to be beaten, regardless if you are a Haredi Jew who detests a Jewish state, or if you are a Zionist columnist. Your nose might be broken, if you dare to speak Hebrew in public in Paris, Brussels or Berlin. Those antisemites hate Jews. Ilany seems to have not the slightest insight in this situation for Jews in Europe and Germany today, nor has Haaretz, taken their headline.

Ilany deals with the Jewish Museum Berlin and its critics, like Thomas Thiel from the Frankfurter Allgemeine, as well as with my colleague Michael Kreutz and myself, without mentioning our support of Thiel in the Tagesspiegel in early January, though. In his article in December 2019, Thiel correctly points to the pro-BDS and pro-Islamism climate in Germany among the cultural elite like at the Jewish Museum Berlin, which will have a new director (from Amsterdam), starting in April 2020. He also pointed out that the comparison or equation of antisemitism and Islamophobia is wrong and dangerous.

Ilany writes just a few days after a hardly scholarly, let alone serious journalist attack on critics of antisemitism and research on antisemitism by Christian Meier appeared – in the very same Frankfurter Allgemeine, where Thiel published his piece in December 2019. Meier takes sides with a truly shocking and anti-Jewish attack on the IHRA definition of antisemitism by a Peter Ullrich from the Center for Research of Antisemitism (ZfA) at Technical University, headed by historian Stefanie Schüler-Springorum. The German left-wing weekly jungle world had a debate about Ullrich, where some of his fans attack those communities who reject to give public space to BDS events. What Ullrich and the Center for Research on Antisemitism never learnt: Zero tolerance for antisemitism, be it neo-Nazis or BDS agitators, Jewish or not-Jewish.

The representative of the Jewish Community of Berlin for the fight against antisemitism, Sigi Königsberg, is outraged about Ullrich and the Center for Research on Antisemitism and told the jungle world that the center “loses all its credibility when it has people such as him in their ranks”. Ullrich’s dossier is “not representing the state of the art in research on antisemitism” says Timo Reinfrank, managing director of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation (AAS), a leading antiracist as well as pro-Israel NGO in the Federal Republic of Germany today. Amadeu Antonio was one of the first victims of neo-Nazi violence in December 1990 after the reunification in October of that year.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) is defamed by Ullrich in a paper he wrote for the left-wing Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLS) and Medico International, because the examples of antisemitism accompanying the definition of the IHRA frame agitation against Israel (like comparisons of Nazi Germany and Israel) as antisemitic.

At the central ceremony at Auschwitz on January 27, 2020, Ronald S. Lauder, head of the World Jewish Congress, focused on the unspeakable horror of that place. He also said:

“Over the last 7 years alone, the United Nations general assembly has adopted 202 resolutions condemning countries around the world. Of those 202 resolutions, Israel was condemned 163 times and the rest of the world only 39. 163 against Israel, 39 for the rest of the world.

We all know these votes are absurd. The U.N. ignores truly evil dictatorships that kill millions of their own people. And it is clear as day, that this kind of obsessive Anti-Zionism, is nothing but Anti-Semitism.

The Center for Research on Antisemitism at Technical University attacks the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which was so long in the making and is such an enormous diplomatic success. Self-declared German researchers on antisemitism, though, defame the one and only international definition of antisemitism and mainstream journalists applaud.

In fact, most left-wingers as well as the cultural elite in Germany in all parts of society, from Universities to NGOs, government officials, MPs, foundations, newspapers, politicians, thinks tanks and the like, ever since 9/11 failed to analyze Islamism and its relationship to Islam. The huge increase in headscarves in Europe and Germany since 9/11 is just one indication of the huge as well as sexist and anti-secular threat deriving from Islam. Mass murder attacks like in Paris in 2015 (Bataclan, Jewish kosher supermarket), at the Jewish Museum Brussels or at the Christmas market in Berlin in December 2016 never changed the attitude of most representative in the cultural elite: Islam and Muslims are seen as victims of right-wing agitation, which is in part correct, but never as perpetrators and part of the problem when it comes to democracy, Western values, secularism, antisemitism and the Jewish state of Israel.

Huge funding for football from Qatar or the Arab world also indicates the imperialist character of Islamism (Football leaks) – not unlike Christianity of course. Evangelicals and Islamists have much in common, from an aggressive pro-natalist ideology to a ridiculous system of religious ideology to money, funding and their influence in politics.

Then, post-colonial theory suggests that the Shoah was not unprecedented at all, some go so far and claim that slavery was a bigger crime than Auschwitz. That goes more or less unchallenged in Germany. Meanwhile, the far right promotes the “double genocide” theory and equates Red and Brown, as Dovid Katz has shown ever since 2008, when the infamous Prague Declaration has been signed. It urges Europe to change its textbooks and to define Communism an evil such as Nazism and to establish a common European day of Remembrance for the victims of Totalitarianism, as they frame it. The Jean Rey Place in the European quarter of Brussels will promote that antisemitic and Holocaust distorting ideology.

Taken all these examples, anti-German critic is essential – as it opposes the denial of the unprecedented character of the Shoah and Muslim or Islamist as well as secular, left-wing, mainstream, right-wing extremist and post-colonial antisemitism in all its forms, including anti-Zionism.

For Haaretz and Ilany, the “anti-Germans” are responsible or co-responsible for the pro-Israel climate in Germany – and that is indeed true. And that is fine, too. Anti-Germans are a tiny group of a few thousand people, but they succeeded ever since fall 2000 and the second Intifada to convince politicians, policy-makers and parts of the public that antisemitism is a huge threat, including anti-Zionism and BDS. There cannot be a proof for their influence, though. Mainstream media like leading weekly Der Spiegel still promote or coquet with BDS and dismiss (anti-BDS and anti-antisemitism) editors such as Georg Diez, for example. However, there might be anti-German influence in the groundbreaking anti-BDS resolution of the German Bundestag from May 17, 2019 – ever since the anti-Zionist camp runs riot.

However, there are still some troubling tendencies in the (post-) anti-German camp, including their blind eye on Trump’s sexist and racist character and his quasi one-man-fascist policies. They also ignore the left-wing Zionist people in Israel and support Netanyahu, regardless how mistaken his actions are, and I am not talking about corruption alone, but his ideology and the shift of Israeli political culture towards the right.

There are Jewish publicists who go berserk against critics of BDS and anti-Zionism and Antideutsche or the anti-German movement. De facto they also defame any left-wing Zionist agenda, criticism of Islamism and the analogy of antisemitism and so-called Islamophobia. Agitators against critics of antisemitism include Micha Brumlik, Shimon Stein and Moshe Zimmermann. Particularly Brumlik’s words (critics like Michael Kreutz and myself are “McCarthy-like”, “paranoid” and we are guilty of “character assassination”) are way beyond a serious debate, as journalist Alan Posener has pointed out.

Let’s start again: Who are the anti-Germans?

At the core of criticism of Germany by the anti-Germans or Antideutsche is the following remark in the “Instructions for British Servicemen in Germany 1944”:

“The deeper you dig into the German character, the more you realise how different they are from us. So don’t be taken in by first impressions.

Many left-wingers never ever cheered for Germany when it comes to football, they preferred the Netherlands like in the 1970s, or England, even Italy, despite its fascist legacy. That said, anti-Germans existed avant la lettre, before they called themselves like that and were seen like that.

The unofficial start of the antideutsche movement was November 9, 1989, the day the Berlin Wall fell and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) sang the German national anthem alongside with the conservatives and liberals in the German Bundestag, which at the time was in Bonn at the Rhine. Shocked by that nationalistic behavior of the SPD, the publisher of the one and only left-wing monthly, Konkret, Hermann L. Gremliza, left the party.

Many left-wingers opposed the so-called “reunification” of Germany on October 3, 1990. Not all of them, though, were pro-Israel. During the First Gulf War in 1991 against Saddam Hussein, many left-wingers refused Konkret’s pro-Israel stance. A major controversy about antisemitism, the Shoah and German history occurred in 1996, when American political scientist Daniel J. Goldhagen published his Harvard PhD about “Hitler’s willing Executioners”.

This groundbreaking study revealed that many so-called anti-Germans were not anti-German at all, they still analyzed the Holocaust via old-school Marxist economic terms. On the other side, Goldhagen then supported the first German war after 1945, the attack on Serbia in 1999, there was a clash about this during a major conference in spring 1999 in the city of Potsdam, where many anti-Germans took part and were attacked by both anti-anti-German left-wingers and the pro-war and rather neocon-like publicists.

Others rather used irony, listened to Madonna pop music (and not hardcore Punk), used Nike or Adidas sportswear or dressed rather well, contrary to the “black is back” dress-code of the radical left (which in a way reminds to Sartre-like existentialism).

Most importantly, though, Antifa was at the core of the early anti-Germans. Defending refugees and immigrants or German born migrants (whose parents once came to Germany from Turkey, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Portugal, Morocco etc.) was essential. Racist attacks and murder like in Solingen, Mölln, Rostock-Lichtenhagen and many other places, were seen as direct result of the reunification of Germany in 1989/90, alongside with the rise of neo-Nazi terror and mainstream racist policies like the change of the law concerning immigration and Asylum in spring 1993.

At that time antiracist activism was much bigger than today, and anti-Germans were still part of the bigger Left, so to say. The Goldhagen debate and several actions against the local German population by anti-Germans divided the antiracist camp: on the one side there were the cool, Western, pro-Israel anti-Germans and on the other side the antiimperialist, anti-Western, anti-anti-German and rather anti-Zionist mainstream leftists.

Interestingly, many antifascist activists in the former GDR were and are pro-Israel and anti-German, much more so than old-school antifascists in the FRG (West-Germany), who were very much inclined to both Marxist distortion of the Shoah and to antiimperialist, anti-Zionist ideology and action – including solidarity with terror groups from Latin America to left-wing nationalist groups in Europe, ETA, the PFLP and PLO, Hamas and Hezbollah, depending on how radical the group or activists were and are.

Many in the pro-Israel camp indeed support Trump, whether they analyze him in Hegelian terms, as some did in Germany from the post-anti-German circles, or simply embrace his aggressive, sexist and racist agenda.

Others, like the ADL, honor antifascists such as Sacha Baron Cohen, who gave one of the most vibrant pro-Antifa, anti-antisemitism and anti-Facebook speeches in recent years, when he was awarded the International Leadership Award in November 2019.

After the nasty fascist climate in Germany in the 1990s with dozens of killed immigrants (we did not categorize them as Muslims, by the way, but as victims of neo-Nazism), from 2000 through 2007 the neo-Nazi National Socialist Underground (NSU) killed 10 people, nine immigrants, and one police woman. Until today, neo-Nazi terror activities are a huge threat to Jews, immigrants, left-wingers – and even conservatives, take the murder of conservative politician of the governing CDU Walter Lübcke in June 2019 by a neo-Nazi or neo-Nazi group. Lübcke said, that those (nasty) Germans who do not like the humanist immigration policies and support for refugees, are free to leave the country. He was a 100% correct.

Parallel to neo-Nazi terror and an extreme nationalist and right-wing climate with the election of the right-wing extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) into the German Parliament in September 2017, Islamism took stage: As we say, then came 9/11.

That Tuesday afternoon (European time), evening and night in September 2001 made crystal clear that many left-wingers as well as mainstream historians and scholars, the cultural elite in Germany, embraced Schadenfreude. Some left-wing radicals or Autonome (autonomous people, the more militant wing of the German left) ordered “Bin-Laden cocktails” in their favorite bars in Hamburg, Bremen or Berlin. The old antisemitic and Holocaust distorting slogans from 1968 “SS – SA – USA” transformed into “USA – headquarter of genocide” after 9/11 and before. Islamism was no problem for most left-wingers, despite their disgust for religion, they embraced Muslim extremism.

9/11 was the starting point for an even bigger anti-German movement. Now they saw Islamism, Jihad and anti-Western ideology as well as antisemitism and anti-Zionist ideology at the core problem of our time.

A typical example from a rally after 9/11 in Berlin on a November 9, dedicated to remember the antisemitic nights of pogroms from 1938. When we walked alongside all these self-declared antifascists and displayed our Israeli flag, one leftist screamed “until you arrived this was a nice rally.” Read: remembering the dead Jews of the Shoah is ok for Germans, including the Left, but if you show support for living Jews in Israel, they disagree.

Ilany points out, that many anti-Germans have no interest in dealing with Jews and Israel, as long as they are leftists or anti-Bibi. He is right, as long as we deal with activists who make fun of the two-state solution such as Stephan Grigat from the NGO “Stop-the-Bomb” in Vienna and Berlin. He once posted a cartoon on Facebook showing Merkel and Netanyahu, the German chancellor saying “We should keep on focusing on the two-state solution” and Netanyahu responds “Is Germany in such a troubling shape?” Some anti-Germans laugh about that kind of anti-Palestinian jokes, but in fact this is an anti-Zionist joke as well, ignoring the Israeli Left and all those who fight the occupation and for a Palestinian state from a Zionist point of view.

Konkret publisher Gremliza distanced himself from former allies or colleagues such as Grigat and wrote an open letter to him and Stop-the-Bomb in February 2018 (Konkret 2/18). If Ilany is aware of that, we do not know. He is for sure not aware of the fact that Gremliza stood for the most outspoken and prominent anti-German articles, columns and books.

Therefore, Ilany is wrong to blame the entire anti-German or antideutsche movement for that development of blinded pro-Bibi and pro-Trump activists. Finally, in times of a pro-BDS climate at the Jewish Museum Berlin, and even more generally a climate that denies the specificity of antisemitism and compares the “longest hatred” (Robert S. Wistrich) to so-called Islamophobia or any other “prejudice,” without analyzing the huge threat deriving from Islamism or post-colonialism – criticism must be at the forefront.

Perhaps Ilany could read the obituary for Gremliza (1940–2019) by Michael Wuliger from January 2, 2020, leading columnist at the weekly of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, the Jüdische Allgemeine, where Wuliger points out that

(only) “in Germany, Jews can be left-wingers, with no shame” – “thanks to Gremliza”, the “communist for Israel.”

That is what anti-Germans are all about.

Das Ende einer linksradikalen Ära: Zum Tode von Hermann L. Gremliza (20.11.1940–20.12.2019)

Hermann L. Gremliza, Kommunist und pro-israelischer Publizist, war der bedeutendste Polemiker, den die Bundesrepublik je hatte.

Er wollte nie konstruktiv sein, aber die Zukunft aufbauen helfen, eine jenseits von Kapitalismus und bürgerlicher Herrschaft.

Schon vor 1989 war das ein aussichtsloses Unterfangen und er wusste das. Nach dem 9. November 1989, als die SPD die Nationalhymne im Bundestag zu Bonn mitsang, trat er aus der Partei aus und war Begründer der antideutschen Linken. 1991 war er an der Seite Israels gegen Saddam Hussein. Konkret verlor oft Tausende Abonnent*innen und das war auch gut so.

Wer Gremliza je erlebte, spürte diese Lebens- und Kritik- und Angriffslust, noch zu Zeiten, wo er gezeichnet von der Krankheit, Lesungen gab und monatlich seine Kolumnen und seinen Express schrieb.

Ich hatte das große Glück, Gremliza letztes Jahr am 7. September in seinem Hamburger Lieblingsrestaurant zu treffen, wir diskutierten fast 3 Stunden lang.

Gremliza war ein äußerst warmherziger Mensch, sein Gesicht zeugte von einer seltenen Wärme und Offenheit, zumal angesichts der ubiquitären bürgerlichen Kälte. Seine Augen und seine Stimme waren immer noch die eines kleinen schwäbischen Jungen, witzig, offenherzig, frech und ehrlich, nicht zuletzt radikal.

In der Abiturzeitschrift unseres Gymnasiums im April 1989 schrieb ich eine Glosse über unsere klassenkämpferische Klassenlehrerin (Klassenkampf von oben, BWL/VWL) und ging auf Gremliza ein.

Viele selbst ernannte “Antideutsche” oder Dummschwätzer, die heute meinen, ohne sie wäre Israel dem Iran hilflos ausgeliefert, sah er nicht mehr als Linke an, eher als Lakaien von Springer. Richtig angewidert war er von Tuvia Tenenbom, mit dem er ein Kumpel war zuvor, nachdem dieser sich mit Nazis auf Rittergütern traf und der Spiegel davon berichtete.

Niemand konnte publizistisch und sprachlich so luzide dieses Land zerpflücken wie Gremliza.

Wir trafen uns in einem Ristorante in Hamburg-Winterhude. Der Betreiber war der vielleicht älteste Freund von Gremliza seit den frühen 1970er Jahren, ein super netter Mensch. Die beiden waren sehr enge Freunde, wie Brüder, das kam mir jedenfalls in den Stunden, die wir dort waren, so vor. Da wurde auch überdeutlich, was für ein passionierter Koch Gremliza war. In den 1960er Jahren kaufte er oft Forellen und anderen Fisch in einer kleinen Ortschaft in Baden-Württemberg auf der Schwäbischen Alb unterhalb der Burg Lichtenstein, Honau – exakt dort lebte ich als Baby und Kleinkind ein paar Jahre ab 1970. Das erzählte ich ihm, weil Honau in Hamburg kaum jemand kennen dürfte.

Gremliza wollte die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft abgeben und Däne werden, wie er mir erzählte, es hat nicht mehr gereicht. Sehr traurig.

Gremliza betonte, es sei völlig scheißegal (solche Worte waren die seinen auch), was Israel macht, es ist immer umgeben von Erzfeinden und international zum Abschuss freigegeben und bekommt 100% Solidarität von ihm, das war nicht so dahin geschwätzt, das war der Kern seines Lebens, wie ich ihn fand – antideutsch und pro-jüdisch/pro-israelisch. Klar, dass darüber die junge Welt in ihrem Nachruf nichts schreibt.

Daher ist es nur konsequent, dass der erste Nachruf auf Hermann L. Gremliza in der Jüdischen Allgemeinen publiziert wurde: „Vielleicht der größte Journalist des Landes“. Die Jüdische Allgemeine betont, dass Gremliza gerade als Kommunist pro-israelisch war und ein Freund von Ignatz Bubis, dem damaligen Vorsitzenden des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland.

Ich hatte die Ehre, eine exklusive kleine Tour durch Hamburg in seinem Wagen zu bekommen, er fuhr mich bis zur Hafenstraße, u.a. vorbei an der Villa von Jan-Philipp Reemtsma (ein weißes Haus, wo natürlich ein anderer Name an der Klingel steht), der ja früher jeden linken Spinner in Hamburg finanzierte, ehe er und jene staatstragend wurden; auch das erzählte Gremliza lakonisch, schelmisch, verschmitzt, ironisch, ohne je den Hauch von Missgunst oder Abscheu; in seinen Worten war Distanz, radikale, aber sooo weltoffen, ohne jede K-Gruppen Mentalität.

Wir sprachen über Klaus Briegleb und dessen fantastische Kritik der Gruppe 47, aber dann auch über dessen Leiche im Keller, Nazi  BND Reinhard Gehlen…

Dann ging es um Peter Hacks, dessen fehlerfreies Schreiben und luzides Attackieren des Antisemiten Friedrich Ludwig Jahn seine Augen wieder zum Leuchten brachten.

So mit 17 hab ich das erste Mal Konkret gelesen, mein Vater hat die immer gekauft (1987), ohne Gremlizas Konkret (wie sporadisch auch immer ich die später las, als ich kein Abonnent mehr war, 9/11 war eine gewisse Zäsur) wäre ich niemals so ein Linker geworden.

Konkret war Gremliza, häufig reichte es, nur seine Kolumne zu lesen. Damit war der Monat gerettet und die linksradikale Distanz zum normalen oder linken Mainstream wieder sprachlich und analytisch auf den Punkt gebracht.

Ich hab Gremliza in Uni-Seminararbeiten zitiert, was die Note nicht zwingend verbesserte, und ihm mein dickstes Buch “Der Komplex Antisemitismus” 2018 gewidmet und mit persönlicher Widmung zum 78. Geburtstag geschickt.

Gremlizas Vater war ein Anti-Nazi, er erzählte mir von dessen Exil in Frankreich, später schaffte er beim Daimler in Stuttgart. Als Gremliza 1974 Konkret übernahm, kam der Vorgesetzte seines Vaters ins Büro und meinte „Ist das Ihr Sohn, dieser Rote“? „Ja, das ist mein Sohn“, antwortete Gremliza senior mit Stolz. Der Vorgesetzte, der so entsetzt fragte, überlebte dann das Jahr 1977 nicht, dafür sind nach dem Nazi Preise und Hallen benannt, die Hans-Martin-Schleyer-Brücke in Esslingen am Neckar unweit vom Daimler wird alsbald liebevoll renoviert.

Unser wichtigster Kritiker ist tot. Niemand wird diese Lücke füllen können.

Genosse Gremliza, es war ein Fest, die Hochzeit der Kritik: Danke.

Die ganze Rezension auf dem “Portal für Politikwissenschaft” lesen.

“Dieser auf Initiative des Verlags entstandene Band von Norbert Frei und seinen Koautor*innen besteht aus acht Kapiteln, von denen jeder Autor und jede Autorin zwei verfasst hat, sowie den beiden gemeinsam geschriebenen einführenden und abschließenden Abschnitten.

Zentrale Elemente des neuen Nationalismus wie das „Sommermärchen“ von 2006 oder die höchst problematische Rolle der Massenmedien im Umgang mit der AfD wie beispielsweise in Talkshows in ARD und ZDF werden in dem Band nicht touchiert.

Unter dem Strich merkt man dem Buch an, dass Frei vom Ullstein Verlag zweimal gebeten werden musste, es auf den Weg zu bringen. Einzig Tändler hat einige interessante Abschnitte, die auch für die politikwissenschaftliche Forschung zur Neuen Rechten und dem erstarkenden Nationalismus relevant sind. Entgegen den Autor*innen geht es meines Erachtens gerade nicht um die richtige „Dosis“ an „Patriotismus“ ( 216), sondern um eine klare begriffliche und ideologiekritische Analyse und Kritik gerade auch des Begriffs „Patriotismus“ in Deutschland, um dem Nationalismus in die Schranken zu weisen. Die vier Autor*innen wenden sich gegen die „erinnerungspolitische Wende um 180 Grad“ (207), wie sie von Björn Höcke und der AfD vertreten wird. Dabei unterstützen sie doch nicht weniger eine solche erinnerungspolitische Wende, wenn sie, wie gezeigt, Rot und Braun analogisieren.”

Norbert Frei und seine Ko-Autor*innen sehen die Gefahr, dass „Deutschland derzeit von rechts zusammenzuwachsen“ drohe. Viele Positionen von AfD, Pegida und der Neuen Rechten seien in der Mitte der Gesellschaft angekommen und die liberale Demokratie sei durch eine neue nationalistische Formation bedroht. Mit dem Buch sollen die Kontinuitäten rechten Denkens seit 1945 und dann wieder seit 1989/90 aufgezeigt werden. Es geht dabei jedoch weniger, wie Rezensent Clemens Heni anmerkt, um die heutige Neue Rechte und deren zeithistorische Einordnung, sondern einzelne Kapitel beleuchten die Adenauerzeit, die DDR sowie rassistische Umtriebe in den 1970er und 1990er-Jahren.

Der vermutlich schlimmste Anschlag in Deutschland auf Juden seit 1945 in Halle in Sachsen-Anhalt am 9. Oktober 2019 an der dortigen Synagoge zeigt mit unfassbarer Brutalität, deutscher Kälte und minutiös geplantem Vernichtungsdrang den Kern der Neuen Rechten und des Neonazismus: den Antisemitismus.

Von Holocaustleugnung, die der Täter via Livestream seiner Nazi-Fanbasis auf Englisch präsentierte, über Verschwörungsmythen hin zum perfide geplanten Datum, dem höchsten jüdischen Feiertag Yom Kippur, zeigt sich der in diesem Land immer abrufbare Drang zur Tötung von Juden.

Es geht Nazis darum Juden zu töten, alle anderen Opfer sind „nur“ Konsequenz des Judenhasses. Ohne Juden gäbe es keine Migration, keine Holocausterinnerung, keinen Feminismus, keine Klimadiskussion etc. pp.

Innenminister Horst Seehofer ist ein enger Kumpel von Victor Orbán, der exakt diesen Antisemitismus promotet – ein Jude wie George Soros sei für NGOs verantwortlich, die Migranten nach Europa schleusten, damit die „nationale Identität“ Ungarns (oder Bayerns) destabilisiert würde. Natürlich ist jetzt Seehofer sehr betroffen. Hat nix mit nix zu tun.

Dazu kommt wie immer in Deutschland das staatliche Versagen oder Mittun. Seit Jahren fordert die jüdische Gemeinde in Halle Polizeischutz, auch diesmal, explizit an Yom Kippur. Es geschah nichts und man darf eine antijüdische Grundhaltung im Polizeipräsidium sehr wohl annehmen, denn die Kosten für die Abstellung von wenigstens zwei bewaffneten Beamten auch nur an diesem speziellen, wichtigsten jüdischen Tag im Jahr, sind lächerlich.

Die Hilflosigkeit der „TV-Experten“ zeigte sich zum Beispiel auf n-tv, wo mancher Experte fast schon hoffte, dass der Nazi „wahllos“ um sich geschossen habe, es also doch nicht gezielt gegen Juden gegangen sei. Diese Entwirklichung des Antisemitismus kennen wir seit langer Zeit.

Es ist purer Zufall und unglaubliches Glück, dass jene Türe der Synagoge den Schüssen und Molotowcocktails des Nazitäters standhielt, sonst hätte es vermutlich das schrecklichste antisemitische Massaker in Deutschland seit dem Ende des Nationalsozialismus gegeben. Es ist kein Zufall, dass angesichts des Trumpismus das schlimmste antisemitische Massaker in den USA passierte, in Pittsburgh in einer Synagoge. Hierzulande sind die Neuen Rechten große Fans von Trump.

Halle hängt direkt mit der Alternative für Deutschland und deren zur Gewalt und zu Antisemitismus aufhetzender Rhetorik zusammen, von Gaulands „Vogelschiss“, den der Holocaust bedeute, über Goebbels-Höckes Geschrei nach Widerstand hin zu den Gewaltfantasien in den anti-sozialen Netzwerken der Anhänger*innen der AfD, der Identitären Bewegung und anderer Nazis.

Der Angriff auf die Juden in Halle zeigt ganz deutlich: das Ziel der neuen Nazis ist das gleiche wie das ihrer Großväter, die Juden. Wenn sie die jedoch aus zufälligen Gründen oder technischen Problemen nicht als Opfer vor den Gewehrlauf bekommen, dann werden andere Opfergruppen gewählt, Muslime, Migranten, Linke, Feministinnen.

Wir haben es mit Staatsversagen zu tun, mit dem absichtlichen Nicht-Gewähren von Polizeischutz für die Synagoge in Halle an der Saale. Im Heucheln ist Deutschland schon seit langem Weltmeister. In Berlin oder München und Hamburg werden jüdische Einrichtungen doch primär deshalb massiv geschützt, weil es eine PR-Maßnahme ist, es wäre „für das Ausland“ ein erschreckendes Zeichen, wenn wieder Synagogen brennen würden. Wäre es die letzten Jahre tatsächlich um den Schutz aller jüdischen Einrichtungen in diesem Land gegangen, wäre der Anschlag in Halle nicht passiert. Ja, wäre die Polizei wenigstens SOFORT nach dem Notfall-Anruf des Vorsitzenden der Jüdischen Gemeinde Halle losgerast, wäre wenigstens der Mord in dem Döner-Restaurant verhindert worden.

Wie die Publizistin Veronika Kracher festhält, ist es absolut unfassbar, dass dieser Nazi, den die Bild-Zeitung natürlich auf die Titelseite brachte und auch (zumal private) TV-Stationen den Mörder minutenlang in Großaufnahme zeigten, fünf Minuten in voller Kampfuniform und mit Waffen vor der Synagoge stand. Das nennt man Staatsversagen. Eine Polizeistreife braucht eine Minute, um an einem solchen Ort in der INNENSTADT einer Großstadt zu sein.

Auch ein roter Notfallbutton ist den Juden verwehrt worden, dabei ist das ein technisches Kinderspiel, alte Leute haben so einen Button etc. pp.

Und dann gibt es das Versagen der Linken bei der Analyse des Antisemitismus. Im Juni 2018 gab es eine Kampagne mit dem Titel „Solidarität statt Heimat“. Es geht gegen Rassismus, Nazis und die Neue Rechte. Das ist sehr richtig. Aber zu Gaulands „Stolz auf deutsche Soldaten in zwei Weltkriegen“, also sekundärem Antisemitismus, kein Wort. Nichte eines. Das Nomen Antisemitismus oder das Adjektiv antisemitisch sucht man vergebens in diesem Manifest „Solidarität statt Heimat“.

Auch vom islamistischen Antisemitismus natürlich kein Wort. Auch jetzt wird kaum jemals erwähnt, dass letzten Freitag, 04. Oktober 2019, ein Syrer in Berlin vor der großen Synagoge in der Oranienburger Straße mit einem Messer bewaffnet, „Fuck Israel“ und „Allahu Akbar“ schreiend, Polizist*innen bedrohte, die dort 24/7 die Synagoge bewachen und den Angreifer mit Pfefferspray unschädlich machten. Ein Richter ließ ihn wieder frei, bis er nach mehreren Tagen dann doch festgenommen wurde.

Die Erklärung „Solidarität statt Hass“ wurde von der Elite in den Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften unterzeichnet, all jenen, die sich als die „Guten“ vorstellen. Doch sind sie es? Von der mit antisemitischen Invektiven in ihrer Doktorarbeit promovierten Naika Foroutan und dem jüdischen Koscherstempelverteiler für die antisemitische Boykottbewegung BDS Micha Brumlik hin zu dem „Experten“ für Rechtsextremismus Matthias Quent sind fast 17.000 Unterschriften unter diesem erbärmlichen Dokument „Solidarität statt Heimat“ zu finden. Mit keinem Wort wird der Antisemitismus der Neuen Rechten, der AfD oder der Identitären Bewegung auch nur en passant erwähnt. Dabei ist der Antisemitismus der Kern der Neuen Rechten und aller Nazis seit jeher.

Das ergänzt somit den neu-rechten Einsatz von Publizisten wie Henryk M. Broder, der mit AfD-nahen Kolleginnen wie Vera Lengsfeld seit Jahren für ein hetzerisches Klima in diesem Land steht und namentlich Migration, den Islam, den Feminismus und Angela Merkel attackiert. Es gibt auch Journalisten wie Eldad Beck, der sich vor wenigen Tagen in der Propagandapostille Israel Hayom fürchterlich aufregte, dass Angela Merkel den Herzl Award des World Jewish Congress erhalten wird.

Dabei hat Angela Merkel mehr für jüdisches Leben in Deutschland geleistet als die meisten Politiker*innen oder die erwähnten Publizisten.

Angela Merkel hat verhindert, dass dieses Land völlig in den Faschismus kippt und der Antisemitismus noch stärker wird. Dass das immer noch viel zu wenig war, völlig richtig. Aber wenn sie nicht mehr Kanzlerin sein wird, dann behüte uns – wer vor dem neuen Faschismus? Gott („Gott ist tot“)? Die Engländer („fuck Brexit“)? Die US Army („fuck Trump“)? Macron? Die Linke?

Juden würden hinter allem Übel stecken. Das ist der Kern des 20. Jahrhunderts, des Nationalsozialismus und der Shoah. Bis heute hat sich der Antisemitismus, der „längste Hass“ seit der Antike (Robert S. Wistrich), gehalten, in unzähligen Varianten.

Antijüdische Hetzparolen wie „Die Juden sind unser Unglück“ (Heinrich von Treitschke, 1879), „Israel ist unser Unglück“ (2019, Partei „Die Rechte“), die „Protokolle der Weisen von Zion“ von 1905 und allen unerdenklichen Verschwörungsmythen, die Juden gleichzeitig hinter dem Kapitalismus und dem Kommunismus sehen, hinter patriarchaler Naturzerstörung und antipatriarchalem antinatalistischem Feminismus, zeigen die unfassbare „Vielfalt“ des Antisemitismus, seine Wandelbarkeit und zur Vernichtung schreiende Dimension. Es ist eine „mörderische Obsession“, wie das Meisterwerk des bedeutendsten Antisemitismusforschers unserer Zeit von 2010 heißt (Robert S. Wistrich, 1945–2015).

Der Anschlag in Halle zeigt den Antisemitismus in ungeschminkter Version, ganz offen und brutal. Nur durch Glück gab es kein Massaker in der Synagoge, die Polizei hätte es geschehen lassen – und zwar absichtlich, das ist der Skandal, der alles über die (ost-)deutschen Zustände sagt. Jetzt wird es Polizeischutz geben, weil jetzt nicht mal mehr das Polizeipräsidium in Halle behaupten kann, die Synagoge in Halle sein nicht akut gefährdet und jüdisches Leben sicher.

Die Lehre aus Halle lautet:

1) Der Kern der Neuen Rechten und des alten und neuen Nazismus ist der Antisemitismus.

2) Auf den deutschen Staat können sich Juden nicht verlassen.

3) Die TV-Anstalten werden weiterhin die neuen Nazis in die Studios einladen und den Neonazismus schön reden.

4) Die Linken werden so tun, als ob sie das alles hätten kommen sehen, dabei war es gerade die Linke, die den Antisemitismus als Phänomen sui generis verleugnet und exemplarisch zeigt, dass sie noch nicht mal den Judenhass der Nazis und Neuen Rechten sieht oder ernst nimmt.

 

 

Verena Brunschweiger, Clemens Heni: Blinde Flecken bei Fridays for Future (FFF), Eschatologie und meditativer Antizionismus bei Extinction Rebellion (XR)

Die zeitweilige Blockade großer Straßenkreuzungen durch „Extinction Rebellion (XR)“, die entgegen jeder linken Theorie und Praxis mit der Polizei kooperieren und es darauf abzielen, kurzzeitig festgenommen zu werden, zeigt: die Klimakatastrophe ist auf den Straßen angekommen. Viele wollen lieber meditieren, verkleiden sich geradezu eschatologisch, als ob nur sie das Ende der Zeit kommen sehen können und wüssten, wie es abzuwenden sei. XR wirkt wie eine religiöse Erweckungsbewegung – dabei muss es um eine Kritik des industriekapitalistischen Naturzerstörungssystems gehen, ohne die Fehler der frühen Grünen zu begehen, die mit alten und neuen Nazis kooperierten. Zudem muss jede soziale Bewegung hier und heute sich der Neuen Rechten entgegenstellen, wer das nicht tut, hat die Zeichen der Zeit, vom Brexit über Trump und Bolsonaro hin zur AfD und anderen identitären Nazis nicht erkannt. Für eine linke Ökologiediskussion gehörte das immer zusammen, Antifa und Anti-AKW etc., aber heute scheint das bei vielen vergessen.

Die verglichen mit XR größere, aber viel dezentraler organisierte soziale Schüler*innen-Bewegung Fridays for Future (FFF) um Greta Thunberg und Millionen von Aktivist*innen haben am Klimastreiktag, Freitag, den 20. September 2019, in einer einzigartigen Aktion weltweit ihre Wut hinausgeschrien. Die Nazis, Klimawandelleugner*innen von AfD bis zu Trump oder Bolsonaro drehen durch und wissen, dass sie es nie schaffen werden, weltweit Millionen von Menschen zu motivieren, für die gleiche Sache einzutreten: alle Menschen sind gleich und alle Menschen sollten sich solidarisch verhalten, denn wir alle sind Teil des Planeten Erde.

Seit Anfang der 1970er Jahre ist das Thema Ökologie auf der Agenda, jedenfalls theoretisch. Bis heute hat sich die Situation des von Menschen gemachten Klimawandels jedoch massiv verschärft. Der Klimabeschluss der Großen Koalition vom 20.9. ist ein Zeichen, wie zynisch die Mächtigen mit der Situation umgehen, Kern ist und bleibt: Es darf sich nichts Grundsätzliches ändern. Doch Fridays for Future tragen unbewusst zu dieser Affirmation des Bestehenden bei, und das zweifach: erstens bezüglich des Natalismus und zweitens angesichts der Euphorie ob der ach-so-ökologischen neuen Klasse von Kapitalist*innen, die „nachhaltig“ produzierten – und das vorgeblich ganz selbstlos.

Neben den streikenden Schüler*innen war am Klimastreiktag das Demonstrieren von Schwangeren und Eltern mit Babies, Kleinkindern, Kindern und Großeltern mit Enkelkindern etc. auffallend. „Parents for Future“ kommen sich obercool vor und merken gar nicht, dass sie selbst Teil des Problems sind. Viele haben ihr Leben lang bei Mercedes, Audi, VW, Porsche, Bosch, RWE, der Verpackungsindustrie, Lidl, Aldi, REWE, in der Landwirtschaft, als Flugbegleiter*in oder einem x-beliebigen anderen Bereich gearbeitet und zur Klimakatastrophe mit beigetragen und kriegen dann im Alter die Vollkrise. Doch was bringen Krokodilstränen außer einem etwas besseren Gewissen?

Internationale Debatten über einen Gebärstreik, wie wir sie aus den USA oder Kanada und anderen Ländern kennen, wurden selbst in der von FFF gemachten Ausgabe der FR vom 20.9. einfach ignoriert. Dabei ist die Sängerin Miley Cyrus weltbekannt und möchte auch aus ökologischen Gründen keine Kinder zeugen.

Dann fehlt außerdem sehr häufig eine klare und analytisch fundierte Kapitalismuskritik. Es geht schnell gegen „Banken“, was aber noch keine luzide Kapitalkritik ersetzt und in den letzten Jahrzehnten und historisch viel zu häufig in eine auch strukturell antisemitische, verkürzte Kapitalismuskritik abrutschen kann. Wenn zudem Vandana Shiva ein Vorwort zu dem extinction rebellion Handbuch „Wann, wenn nicht wir“ (September 2019) schreibt und vor wenigen Jahren mit dem BDS-Aktivisten Roger Waters in einer Jury gegen Israel aktiv war, werden wir skeptisch.

Es muss um den Naturschutz gehen sowie um die Zukunft der heutigen Jugend und aller heute lebenden Menschen und nicht um das Weiterwursteln und Befolgen des patriarchal-natalistischen Imperativs. Wir dachten, dass sich durch den Bestseller von Verena Brunschweiger („Kinderfrei statt kinderlos“) von März 2019, der in fast allen Zeitungen, im Radio und Fernsehen diskutiert wurde, etwas geändert hat, wenigstens bei den „Linken“. Pustekuchen.

Buhu! Das reicht uns nicht. Ein ökofeministischer Sozialismus möchte das patriarchale Dogma der Reproduktion als ein absolut zentrales Element unserer Welt in Frage stellen. Wir haben es satt, wenn bei dem Thema „Frauen“ von der Politik wie den NGOs oder der Zivilgesellschaft immer nur die „Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf“ in den Fokus genommen wird, aber niemals Frauen, die aus freien Stücken keine Kinder kriegen wollen.

Es gibt mittlerweile alles Undenkbare, „Metal for Future“, „Unternehmer4F“, „Omis for Future“, „Ungeborene for Future“ und so weiter, was es nicht gibt, grade in Deutschland: „Kinderfreie for Future“, oder „antikapitalistische Radikalfeminist*innen for Future“.
